VLT Explained: Help Customers Pick a Shade

The three letters that end the guessing game

A customer walks the lot, points at the blacked-out truck parked two spots over, and says: “I want that.” And you already know that exact shade is probably illegal on their car, wrong for what they actually do all day, or both. So the guessing game starts. You say “that's pretty dark,” they say “how about medium,” and now you're two adults negotiating a color with words that mean nothing.

There's a faster way, and it hangs on one three-letter number. The moment a customer understands VLT, the whole conversation stops being a vibe and starts being a decision. You stop selling “dark” and start matching a number to a goal. I've watched a fifteen-minute back-and-forth turn into a two-minute “yep, that one” just by putting the right number on the table first.

We're all installers before we're business owners, and the installer instinct is to talk about film. The owner instinct is to teach the customer just enough that they choose confidently and don't come back annoyed. VLT is that just-enough. Here's how I explain it on the shop floor.

What VLT actually measures

VLT stands for Visible Light Transmittance. It's the percentage of visible light that makes it through the finished window. That 's the whole definition. A film rated 35% lets roughly 35% of the light through, which reads as a comfortable, moderate shade. The lower the number, the less light gets through, and the darker the glass looks. Higher number, lighter glass.

The part that trips people up is that the scale runs backwards from how they think about it. Customers assume a bigger number means more tint. It's the opposite. So I give them a quick mental ruler and let them place themselves on it:

  • 70%— barely there. You'd have to look twice to know it's tinted. Popular on windshields where the law is tightest.
  • 50%— a light, clean shade that cuts some glare without announcing itself.
  • 35%— the everyday moderate. Noticeably tinted, still easy to see out of at night.
  • 20%— dark. Good privacy, and you start to feel it on the back seat at dusk.
  • 5%— “limo,” basically blackout. This is the truck-in-the-lot look.

Say those five numbers out loud with a customer and something clicks. “Medium” becomes “so like a 35,” and now you're both pointing at the same thing. That's the entire trick — you've replaced a mood with a measurement.

Film VLT vs finished VLT (the factory-glass twist)

Here's the twist that turns a confident quote into a warranty argument if you skip it: the number printed on the film is not always the number you end up with on the car. Factory glass already carries its own tint. The rear windows and the tailgate on a lot of SUVs and trucks come from the factory noticeably darker than the fronts. That factory glass has a VLT of its own, and your film's rating combines with it.

Roughly, the finished darkness is the film VLT working together with the glass VLT — two shades stacked. So a film rated 20% installed on already-dark factory rear glass ends up meaningfully darker than the same 20% film on clear front glass. Same roll, same number, two different results on the same vehicle. That's not a defect; it's physics. But if you promised “20% all around” and the back looks like limo tint, the customer thinks you messed up.

This is exactly why I quote and demo by the specific window, not by one blanket promise for the whole car. I'll tell a customer “your fronts will land right about here, and because your rear glass is already tinted from the factory, that same film reads darker in back — here's what that looks like.” Two sentences, and you've pre-empted the number-one “this isn't what I asked for” callback in the tint world.

The finished number depends on the actual glass

There's no universal finished-VLT chart, because factory-glass tint varies by make, model, and even which window. Don't promise a precise combined number off a spec sheet. Frame it as “the film combines with your factory glass, so the back reads darker” and prove it with a sample on that car. Honest and defensible beats precise and wrong.

Darkness is not heat: the misconception to kill

This is the big one, and it's the belief that costs your customers the most money and comfort: they think darker equals cooler. It doesn't. VLT measures darkness. It says nothing about how much heat the film keeps out of the cabin.

Heat comfort is mostly about infrared rejection, which is a different property built into the film itself. A high-end ceramic film can be relatively light — you can still see out of it fine — and still reject more heat than a much darker cheap dyed film. The dark dyed film looks like it should be a furnace-beater and mostly just makes the car look tinted while your arm still cooks at a red light.

So when a customer says “I want it dark so it stays cool,” that's your cue to gently separate the two goals. If what they actually want is a cooler cabin on a July afternoon, the lever is film technology — ceramic, and its heat-rejection numbers — not chasing a low VLT. If what they want is privacy and a look, then sure, go darker. Most people want a mix, and once they understand the two dials are separate, they choose way better. Matching VLT to what the customer actually wants

Once darkness and heat are untangled, the choice basically makes itself. Start with the goal, never the number. Here's the map I run through in my head while I'm talking to someone:

  • Privacy and a blacked-out look.Lean darker — the lower VLT numbers. Just flag that “dark for looks” and “dark enough to stay legal” can collide, which is the next section.
  • Beating the heat all day. This is a film-tier conversation, not a shade conversation. Point them at ceramic and its heat-rejection spec. They can get real comfort at a moderate, easy-to-see-out-of shade.
  • Cutting glare on the commute.A moderate shade plus a decent film handles most of it. They don't need limo tint to stop squinting at oncoming headlights.
  • Keeping it factory-subtle. Go lighter. Some folks just want the raw glare and UV knocked down without the car looking modified at all.

Notice none of that is me deciding for them. I'm matching a shade to a stated goal, and a good chunk of the time the honest answer is “you want comfort, so let's talk film, not darkness.” That's a better sale and a happier customer, because they get the thing they actually came in for instead of the thing they thought would deliver it.

Reading the lot: why that truck isn't your answer

Back to the truck the customer pointed at. Copying another vehicle's shade is one of the most reliable ways to send someone home unhappy, and here's why. You don't know that truck's film VLT. You don't know its factory glass. You don't know whether it's even legal where you are. All you can see is the finished look, which is the film and the glass and the lighting all mashed together into one impression.

Put that same “that one” film on a sedan with clear factory glass and it'll read lighter than the truck did. Put a legal shade on their car and it might look nothing like the memory they walked in with. The truck is a feeling, not a spec, and you can't quote a feeling.

So I redirect to something real: a sample strip held against their own glass, in their own car, in daylight. That's the only preview that tells the truth, because it stacks the sample on top of the exact factory tint they're working with. “Forget the truck — hold this on your window and tell me if that's the vibe.” Nine times out of ten they land a shade lighter than they thought they wanted, and they're thrilled they can still see out of it at night.

Legal VLT limits exist, they're set locally, and they vary a lot — by region, and often by which window on the car. I'm not going to quote you a number here, because the number where you are isn't the number where I am, and telling a customer the wrong limit is worse than telling them none. The move is to know your own local law cold and treat it as a real constraint, not a suggestion.

But you don't have to play cop about it. The frame that works is that the limit protects them. A ticket, a failed inspection, being told to strip a fresh install — that's their money and their afternoon, not yours. So I'll say something like “here's the darkest I can legally do on your fronts, and honestly it still looks great — let's keep you out of trouble.” You're on their side, steering them to a shade that's dark enough to be happy and clean enough to not become a problem.

And when someone genuinely wants to go past the line anyway, that's a documented, eyes-open decision on their end — not something you slid past them. Verify the local limit, guide them to a compliant shade first, and let them own any choice beyond it.

Turn the VLT chat into a clean quote

Here's where all of this pays off. Once the customer has picked a shade by goal — a real VLT they saw against their own glass — that number belongs on the quote, per window, right next to the film tier. Fronts at one shade, rears already darker from the factory, windshield strip if they want it. Now the quote isn't “tint job, one price.” It's a spec anyone can install to and nobody can argue with later.

That's the difference between a shop that guesses and a shop that runs on record. Capturing the chosen VLT and film per window means the installer knows exactly what to pull, the customer knows exactly what they approved, and a warranty claim two years out is one search instead of a memory contest. And once the shade is settled, don't make them call back to book. Let them lock the slot themselves while you're under the next car — that's exactly what the online booking storefront is for.
