Setting it up, in order
Mint an API key
On the API settings page, create a key named after the Zap that will use it and choose its scope. Full access is what Zapier needs to create records and manage webhook subscriptions; read-only is enough for a reporting Zap.
Paste it into Zapier
Connect the Service VIN app in Zapier with that key. The key is shown once and never again, so copy it before you leave the page.
Build the Zap
Pick a trigger, pick an action, and let it run. Instant triggers arrive on the event; the polling ones check on Zapier's own schedule.

Does Service VIN connect to Zapier?
Yes — the Zapier app is available in beta. It carries instant triggers for the shop's event catalog (new lead, quote accepted, job won, invoice paid and the rest), polling triggers for new customers, vehicles, quotes, invoices and upcoming appointments, actions that create and update leads, customers, vehicles and job stages, and searches that look a record up mid-Zap.
What can a Zap actually do to my shop?
Exactly what the key you gave it allows. A read-only key can read every resource and change nothing. A full-access key can also create leads and customers and manage webhook subscriptions. A read-only key that attempts a write is refused outright and nothing is created.
Do I need to be technical?
No. The plumbing — the signing, the retries, the event catalog — is already built, so what's left is picking a trigger and an action in Zapier's own builder.
What if the app I want isn't on Zapier?
Two other paths cover most of it. Make reaches the same triggers and actions through the API and webhooks, with branching and filters on top. And a plain webhook can POST a signed payload to any URL you control.
Is there a Make version?
Yes. Make works against the same public API and the same webhook events, which is what makes multi-step, branching scenarios possible without a separate app to install.
