How the math works
Committed film, not just applied film
Your cost isn't the film on the car — it's the film that comes off the roll to get there. That gap is the waste a wall menu never shows.
Fit across the width
For each panel, we work out how many fit across the roll and how many rows of cuts that takes — the length the job actually commits.
Committed minus applied
Committed length × full roll width is the film off the roll. Subtract the area you apply to the vehicle and the rest is scrap.
Turn scrap into dollars
Cost per square foot comes from your roll price, so the scrap becomes a real cost per job — and per month at your job volume.

Film waste, answered
How do I calculate film waste on a PPF or tint job?
Waste comes from the gap between the film you commit off the roll and the film that actually reaches the vehicle. Work out how many panels fit across your roll width, add up the length each row of cuts consumes, and multiply that committed length by the full roll width — that's the film the job takes off the roll. Subtract the area you actually apply (each panel's width × height × quantity) and what's left is scrap. This calculator does that live: enter your roll width, length and cost, lay out the panels, and it shows usable yield, waste percent, and the real dollar cost of that scrap per job and per month.
Why is my usable yield lower than I expect?
Because film is sold on a fixed-width roll, but panels rarely tile it perfectly. A 30-inch panel on a 60-inch roll leaves the strip beside it committed even if you can't reuse it, and an awkward width can force a fresh row that eats length you never apply. Roll width is the biggest lever — matching a job to the roll that nests it tightest, and getting real value out of the offcuts, is where the recovered margin lives.
Does this calculator send my numbers anywhere?
No. All the math runs in your browser — nothing is uploaded, saved or shared. Refresh the page and it resets. The panel presets are rough starting points; adjust every dimension to your own vehicle and glass. Use it as often as you like.
Can I track this waste automatically instead of guessing?
