What is Clear coat?

Definition

Clear coat is the transparent top layer of a factory paint system that provides gloss and UV protection. Paint correction works within the clear coat; cutting through it exposes the colour layer and means a respray, so measuring paint thickness matters.

Why it matters to a shop

Almost everything an appearance shop does happens on the clear coat, and it is finite — correction removes some of it every time. Knowing that is what separates a shop that can say no to another cut from one that hands back a car with nothing left to protect.
